Speech Sidewalk Chalk!

Let’s look at the positives the sun is shining and it’s a beautiful day! Many of us have sidewalk chalk somewhere at home and it is such a great way to integrate many different learning styles and goals! Sidewalk chalk can be used to play a variety of different games: Hangman, Hopscotch, Tic Tac Toe etc. Hangman is a great way to work on inferencing, formulating sentences, spelling and following directions. You can fill the blocks in Hopscotch & Tic Tac Toe with different options depending on your child’s specific learning goals. Some examples include:

1. Rhyming/Word Families: Fill in the blocks with word endings and have the kids come up with words that rhyme before moving to the next block.

2. Categories: Fill the boxes with different letters wherever they land you call out a category and they have to come up with something in that category that starts with the letter they landed on (e.g. If they land on H and you yell out “shape” they could answer Heart). By leaving the categories in your hands it leaves the game open ended for continuous play. For my younger friends you could fill the boxes with different colors or shapes and just have them call out different things that are red or shaped like a circle.

3. Following Directions: Fill the boxes with different directions the students have to follow when they land on it. The number of steps involved can vary depending on your child’s capability.

4. Describing/Inferencing: Have the child hopping think of a “mystery” word. As they hop along, they will give out different clues to help describe the object (e.g. Block 1: Where do you find it? Block 2: What color is it? etc.) You or your other children will use the clues to try to guess what the “mystery” word is.

5. Articulation: Fill the blocks with different words with your child’s speech sound. When they land on a word have them practice saying the word either alone or in a sentence depending on their level.

Hope everyone is staying healthy and safe! Enjoy the nice weather and get outside today!
