Who didn’t love show and tell day at school when you were a little kid? Show and tell is such a great way to work on a variety of different speech and language goals with a wide range of age groups. This is something that you can get the whole family involved in! You can also set up a show and tell virtually with a family member or one of your child’s friends!
What you can do:
Set aside a scheduled time for Show and Tell. Whether you do it once a week or more it is completely up to you!
Pick a category. Maybe today we are finding something “red” or that starts with the letter “B.” You can use adjectives to have everyone find something that is “soft” or “heavy.” The opportunities are endless here!
Depending on your children’s ages the actual “show and tell” part will vary but get together and everyone take a turn sharing the item you chose.
Speech and Language Skills to Target during Show and Tell:
Answering “WH” questions about the object chosen. Examples: Where did they get the object? Who gave them the object?
Answering Yes/No Questions. Keep it simple for some of our little guys, Is the ball green? Can you eat the ball? Or Increase the difficulty for older guys, did we buy the ball at the coffee shop?
Asking “WH” questions to the person sharing. You can work on formulating grammatically correct questions. This can also target social skills, asking appropriate questions and conversational turn-taking.
Target the understanding and use of different adjectives to describe the item.
Comparing and Contrasting between different items that the family chose to work on expand vocabulary skills.
Identify the different categories that items can fit into. Working on making associations between a group of objects to see how they do or do not go together.
The opportunities are truly endless with this activity and it requires little to no prep on your end! Kids will be excited to go around the house and pick something out for their show and tell and get to talk about it. Practice using my show and tell below!
