What to do with your kids at home for the next two weeks?
Unfortunately, everyone is being impacted by the COVID-19. Schools are closing placing students without services over the next few weeks. Parents are scrambling around to help entertain and provide their kids with an education while they are home. In an attempt to help I have put together some ideas that parents can use at home to help support their children’s overall language growth through this process. I am also offering services through Telepractice for any students who would like to receive speech and language services from the comfort of their homes! Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions you may have!
1. Get on a schedule! I think it is very important that children are placed on a schedule during this transition. There are going to be a lot of changes surrounding them and I personally feel that it is extremely important to provide them with a consistent schedule every day.
2. Take the time to sit down and play together! I cannot stress the importance and the power behind play. Take this time with your children and make it a positive experience! Language can be promoted in so many different ways through play!
3. Go outside! Create a scavenger hunt in the yard, play “I Spy” or break out some sidewalk chalk! These can target following directions, answering WH-questions, requesting, and inferencing.
4. Enjoy a meal together as a family! We should be taking advantage of this time spent together. Sometimes life gets in the way and that’s okay, but with after school activities cancelled make a plan to sit down together at mealtimes. These are great opportunities to not only spend time together but to also promote great language skills. Working on turn-taking, requesting and appropriate conversational skills.
I will be posting different activities/games over the next two weeks that parents can use at home to help promote speech & language skills! Please feel free to reach out with any questions regarding your child! I am happy to help in any way I can during this difficult time for everyone!
Stay Safe! Miss Nicole :)
